MP Breakfast Connections – Speaker Kishone Roy: Affordable rental crisis: How can Canadians afford to live and work in Vancouver anymore?
Please join MP Joyce Murray at her Friday, October 13, 2017 MP Breakfast Connections with special guest speaker Kishone Roy, CEO of BC Non-Profit Housing Association (BCNPHA): Affordable rental crisis: How can Canadians afford to live and work in Vancouver anymore?
Home-ownership is already beyond the reach of many people under the age of 30 who aren’t getting help with a down payment from their families. Metro Vancouver’s rental affordability crisis is driving up rents and making it difficult for ordinary Canadians to live and work in the city. People hit hardest are those who don’t have the capacity to pay higher rents, including students, the elderly, and people with disabilities. This is also driving up the number of homeless people in the region. This has obvious social implications as well as for the larger economy, workers may not be able to rent close to their jobs – causing strains on businesses as they seek a reliable labour force to sustain their operations. Both Federal and Provincial governments have recently made significant investments to address the housing crisis in BC, but clearly more needs to be done.
Kishone Roy is CEO of the BC Non-Profit Housing Association. BCNPHA advocates to government, media and the public for affordable housing in British Columbia. During his tenure BCNPHA has more than doubled in size, become the go-to voice on affordable housing for media and research, and moved its offices into Housing Central: a new hub for housing leadership. Kishone also sits on the board of Encasa financial – a mutual fund company owned by the affordable housing sector. A former senior political strategist at the federal and provincial levels and consultant to the academic and non-profit sectors, Kishone holds a Masters degree in Leadership studies.
