Board Governance
HousingU Pathway: Leadership

Building Board Capacity | 2024

Self-Directed Module

Board capacity building is no small thing. It takes time, energy, and commitment – and it’s worth every bit of that and more. Building board capacity is an investment into your community, your society, and you as an individual. This module is designed to get you thinking about how you can best develop your board through board composition, recruitment, retention and of course board evaluation. This course only addresses non-profit society frameworks, but is not limited to housing societies.

I like being able to go through the course at my own pace, and in a relatively short period of time. The resource materials are also extremely helpful and provide good examples. – 2023 participant

This course is ideal for all board members and senior leaders. Thank you for the great information and tools to make us better. Greatly appreciated. – 2023 participant

What you’ll learn

By the end of this module you will be able to:

  • Articulate the skills and competencies on your board and your emerging needs
  • Develop a volunteer recruitment strategy
  • Evaluate your board to look for strengths and gaps
  • Develop a board training and ongoing learning plan that fits your society’s needs and budget

Throughout the course you will read and watch content, and be encouraged to engage in various offline activities to apply your learning to your board role. We know that you may not all have the opportunity to take activities back to your board while you’re in this module; however, this learning is all about your involvement with your board. Our invitation to you is to take the information in this module and make it live in your own situation.

Once you have completed this module you can go on to learn more about board governance in our other self-serve modules.

This module is one of 4 modules which comprise the 12-week facilitated online Board Governance course curriculum, which has been developed in partnership with BC Housing.
