Housing Central Celebrates Asian Heritage Month

In celebration of Asian Heritage Month, this May we join together with our partners in Housing Central to celebrate the rich Asian heritage of our communities. We acknowledge the Asian-heritage community leaders and builders and want to uplift their voices and stories. We will also begin the work to formally tackle anti-Asian racism while acknowledging that this is an ongoing process and just the beginning of our work to dismantle structural racism.

Together with the Co-op Housing Federation of BC, we will be sharing stories of prominent individuals who made a positive impact on our communities across the province. We will be hosting workshops for members to further discuss the long term impact of colonial legislation on Asians in B.C. with a particular emphasis on how the global pandemic has accentuated the feelings of Asian Canadians being shamed, stigmatized, and ‘Othered’.

We are offering an anti-Asian racism training webinar with Dr. Grace Wong-Sneddon:

Building Resilience Together: Supporting Asian Communities on May 25 from 11 am to 12:30 p.m.

We also invite you to join us for a FREE movie night of the linked documentary films Cedar and Bamboo and All Our Father’s Relations.  The directors of Cedar and Bamboo, Kamala Todd and Diana Leung will be with us to discuss the film.

We hope that you stay connected with us online through social media where we will be featuring resources and fun facts of 31 individuals and how they have shaped our communities and sector as a whole. We hope to reframe the ways we value, contribute and create impactful change to support Asian Canadians and their diverse communities.

Watch for more from us to prioritize the resources, tools and guidance our members need to confront anti-Asian racism and transform their communities.
