Help Shape a New Course on Evacuation Planning for Tenants with a Disability

BCNPHA is developing a new course to support non-profit housing providers in creating effective, person-centered emergency evacuation plans for tenants with disabilities. To ensure the training is practical and relevant, we are inviting non-profit housing providers to take part in interviews.

This initiative is part of the response to the coroner’s inquest following a tragic fire where lives were lost, with the goal of improving emergency evacuation outcomes for tenants across the non-profit housing sector.

The course is being shaped through collaboration with BC Housing, a core advisory group of tenants with lived experience of disability, and subject matter experts.

We are especially seeking non-profit housing providers who can contribute in one of two ways:

  • Sharing success: Providers who have developed strong individual evacuation plans and processes for tenants with a disability, who can highlight practices and insights that may benefit peers.
  • Identifying barriers: Providers who face challenges in this area and are open to discussing the obstacles to supporting good evacuation planning for tenants with a disability

Conversations will explore:

  • What knowledge and training would be most valuable for providers;
  • What resources (e.g., policies, funds, templates, training, personnel, technology) are needed to make evacuation planning more effective;
  • What has worked well for your organization (if relevant) including existing practices and training;
  • Barriers and concerns to changing or implementing evacuation processes for individuals.

Interview spaces are limited and offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Sign-up is open until October 15, or until all spaces are filled.

Interviews will take place virtually between October 16–30. You’ll receive an MS Teams invitation after signing up.

Please limit sign up to one interview per organization (you may include multiple staff if desired). A $100 honorarium will be provided to your organization in recognition of your time.
