Commitment to Reconciliation, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion

BCNPHA recognizes the singular importance of reconciliation and distinguishes it from our overall commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion.

BCNPHA is committed to reconciliation within our organization and through our work with Indigenous and non-Indigenous non-profit housing providers and sector stakeholders.

The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada report details the history of colonization and its direct and inter-generational impacts on Indigenous peoples across Canada, with 94 Calls to Action that include specific calls for organizations.

As an organization with an advocacy and education mandate, BCNPHA is committed to:
  • Advocating for a For Indigenous, by Indigenous Urban, Rural and Northern Housing Strategy and amplifying the advocacy of Indigenous partners
  • Delivering education on reconciliation and decolonization to housing providers through partnerships with Indigenous organizations
As an employer, BCNPHA is committed to:
  • Providing education for management and staff on the history of Indigenous Peoples, including the history and legacy of residential schools, the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, and more.
  • Ensuring that Indigenous people have equitable access to jobs

BCNPHA’s work occurs on the ancestral lands and unceded territories of 198 distinct First Nations in British Columbia. Our offices are on the territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish) and Səl̓ílwətaʔ (Tsleil-Waututh) peoples.
