Program Information

Operations and Maintenance (O&M)

Learn how to protect the physical assets of BC’s non-profit housing sector in the most cost effective way.

Program Overview

The Operations and Maintenance (O&M) program consists of 5 online operations and maintenance courses, plus 1 self-directed resource. They include:

  • Building Maintenance (facilitated)
  • Building Systems (facilitated)
  • O&M Plan Development (facilitated)
  • New Construction & Redevelopment (facilitated)
  • Asset Management Foundations (30-day module)
  • Ready, Set, Retrofit! (self-directed resource)

Facilitated courses include moderated discussion forums, a final project, knowledge checks, and take-back-to-work tools that can be used right away. Each course provides 24/7 access and is designed to be interactive, covering all aspects of building operations and maintenance — with a special focus on energy management.

O&M courses can be taken individually in any order. Most of the facilitated courses can be completed in 6-8 weeks, but we allow for a full three months to accommodate busy schedules.

Participants will earn a certificate of completion for each course they successfully complete.

Courses are offered online through HousingU, BCNPHA’s online learning platform. Funding for the program development was provided by FortisBC.

What are the program goals?

The overall goal of the O&M program is to help housing providers operate and maintain affordable housing in a safe, cost effective and energy efficient manner. By the end of the program, participants will have created the foundation for a customized, integrated operations and maintenance plan, designed specifically for their facilities.

Who is this program for?

This program will benefit those just entering the non-profit operations and maintenance profession, as well as seasoned non-profit sector employees interested in creating living spaces that run more economically and efficiently.
