Modern Methods of Construction

The Modern Construction Methods Webinar Series will showcase construction approaches that are already being used or have strong potential for use in the non-profit housing sector. The goal of the series is to equip providers with potential ideas to build and renew affordable housing faster as well as more sustainable, climate resilient, and cost-effective. Each webinar will pair an industry expert presentation with a non-profit case study to highlight different Modern Methods of Construction and explore the successes, challenges, and lessons learned for each method in the context of the non-profit housing sector. The series is intended to introduce modern methods of construction rather than promote any specific approach. Participants will need to conduct additional investigation to determine whether a particular method is appropriate for their projects and organizational context.

Mass Timber

Join us for another session in the Modern Methods of Construction series: Mass Timber.

This session highlights BCNPHA’s 3-over-3 Mass Timber Residential Infill Construction Feasibility Study, which explored whether mass timber construction can be used to add three additional storeys on top of an existing three-storey non-profit housing building without displacing tenants or removing existing structures. Feasibility studies across three Vancouver case study sites examined possible structural approaches, code implications, and estimated costs to determine whether any of the proposed designs warrant further investigation.

Joining us for this session is BC Indigenous Housing Society, who bring firsthand experience from one of the most exciting recent projects in Canadian housing. Their Chief Leonard George Building in Vancouver is Canada’s first mixed-use tall mass timber building built to Passive House standards, combining cutting-edge energy efficiency with a deep commitment to Indigenous values, cultural identity, and long-term community stability. The project was delivered in partnership with BC Housing, CMHC, and the City of Vancouver. Join us to share in the story of the project, lessons learned and practical insights for non-profit housing providers considering mass timer as part of their own development strategies.
