Program Description

An Overview

Welcome to the second session in the BC Non-Profit Housing Climate & Disaster Resilience Webinar Series! Join us monthly May through October for sessions with sector leaders and relevant conversations on how the non-profit housing sector can navigate and respond to various topics in Climate and Disaster response.

Extreme heat is an increasing concern for non-profit housing providers and the tenants they serve. This session will discuss the impacts of heat-related illness, and the demographics most at risk, as identified through the team at Vancouver Coastal Health. We will identify existing tools and resources that can help residents and organizations prepare for future heat events. In addition, we will outline practical actions in the near, medium, and long term to reduce indoor temperatures, improve thermal comfort, and make homes more resilient to extreme heat events. Finally, we provide examples of long-term targeted retrofits to keep units cool, along with potential funding sources.

What Will You Learn?

  • Understand heat-related risks for residents
  • Identify practical measures to support residents during periods of extreme heat
  • Identify building and operational strategies to reduce indoor temperatures and improve heat preparedness
  • Learn about resources and funding opportunities that can support heat preparedness measures
