Program Description

An Overview

The fourth and final session in Housing Provider Legal Education Month!

Attendees will receive an overview of board fiduciary duties, a brief caselaw update on recent decisions, and review best practices for board/senior staff relations, board meeting preparations, board meeting procedures, governance manuals, and crisis management. A key focus of the presentation will be the use of technology to streamline board meeting preparations, board and senior staff communications, and approval processes.

James Struthers

James Struthers is the Founder & Managing Lawyer at macushlaw, a B Corp certified law firm providing a range of legal services to housing providers, First Nations, non-profits, charities and impact enterprises. James is a general practitioner with deep experience in housing related legal matters including corporate, commercial, real estate, compliance, governance, construction, development, financing, mergers and acquisitions and employment. James and the team at macushlaw provide modern and proportionate legal services, understand the available technology for non-profits and provide legal services in a manner informed by the current technological landscape. Their team has assisted on the legal components of many significant efficiency-improving technological adoptions, including contract automation systems. James is also a bencher of the Law Society of BC, has founded and sat on the board of a number of non-profits, and committed to making legal services more affordable and accessible to purpose driven organizations. He is admitted to both the bars of BC and the Yukon. When James isn’t working, you can find him hiking with his rescue pups Pip & Lily in the Kootenays where he lives primarily, plucking away at his guitar, or hacking away at a public golf course.
