Program Description

An Overview

NEW! Climate change is already affecting how we design, build, and manage housing across British Columbia.

This self-paced online course, developed in collaboration with the Academy of Sustainable Innovation, helps housing professionals understand the science behind climate change and explore practical ways to strengthen the resilience of non-profit housing organizations and communities.

Developed in partnership with experts in public health, energy, and housing, this course connects global climate realities to local impacts, from extreme weather to rising energy costs, and offers strategies to reduce risks and adapt operations. Participants will come away with a deeper understanding of how climate change intersects with equity, health, and housing stability, and gain tools to take informed, proactive action in their own work.

  • 30-day online course
  • Self-directed (non-facilitated)

What You’ll Learn

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • Explain the key concepts of climate science and describe how climate change is impacting communities and housing in BC.
  • Identify the vulnerabilities of non-profit housing operations to climate-related risks such as heat, flooding, and poor air quality.
  • Recognize the intersection between climate resilience, equity, and tenant well-being, particularly for vulnerable and equity-deserving populations.
  • Understand the relationship between climate change and Indigenous identity, including the impacts on land, culture, and housing, and the leadership role Indigenous communities play in climate action and resilience.
  • Assess organizational readiness for climate adaptation and outline steps to integrate climate considerations into planning and asset management.
  • Access tools and resources to support ongoing learning, collaboration, and reconciliation-focused approaches to climate resilience within the non-profit housing sector.

Throughout the module you’ll read content and watch a series of videos.
