CIH Canada
BCNPHA and BC Housing have partnered to offer a bursary program for employees of non-profit housing providers who would like to pursue their professional development through the Chartered Institute of Housing Canada. Our goal is to increase capacity within the non-profit housing sector by making educational and professional opportunities more affordable.
CIH Canada, the voice of Canadian housing professionals, has moved into the Canadian Housing and Renewal Association (CHRA), the home for the housing sector. The transition brings renewed energy behind CIH Canada, an opportunity to refresh our courses, and explore deeper partnerships in the sector. For any inquiries, please reach out directly to Mel@chra-achru.ca.
The Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH) Canada is the only professional designation program in Canada specifically designed for affordable and social housing professionals. Through membership and certification, you will attain the knowledge and skills to support your job and career advancement within the affordable housing sector.
CIH Canada is part of the Chartered Institute of Housing, an international network that exists to maximize the contribution that housing professionals make to the well-being of communities. CIH Canada members are part of a community of international housing professionals in 20 countries on five continents across the world. BCNPHA is the provincial partner of CIH Canada for BC.
CIH Canada offers two designations for affordable and social housing professionals, each with their own target group, online and fees. The table below outlines this information. You can find more information about both designations here: http://cihcanada.ca/about-designations/, including contact information to help you determine which designation is right for you.
Each designation requires the completion of four online courses. The designations can typically be achieved in 10-12 months if the courses are taken consecutively.
BCNPHA and BC Housing have designated an initial contribution to the CIH Canada bursary fund for BC non-profit housing providers. The funds will be allocated to reimburse the cost of tuition for the CIH Canada designation by two-thirds, upon completion of the four courses to complete your designation. The bursary does not cover the CIH membership fees.
Recipients must apply for the bursary prior to starting the program and must be pre-approved for the bursary prior to completing their designation, and must hold a CIH Canada standard membership prior to enrolling for courses. Note: if you have already completed courses, or are in progress, contact learn@bcnpha.ca to discuss options. The standard registration fee for CIH Canada is $225/year. Application and membership information can be found here: http://cihcanada.ca/membership-grades/
Langara College in Vancouver, B.C, is Canada’s first post-secondary institution to be validated by the CIH Canada. Students who complete Langara’s Continuing Studies Social Housing Management Certificate qualify to receive CIH Canada’s Certified Designation.
