2025 Lifetime Achievement Award Recipient

Makenna Rielly, Executive Director of Victoria Women’s Transition House Society.

Under Makenna’s leadership, the society has grown significantly. Since 2010, staff has doubled and its budget has tripled.

Her dedication to improving access to affordable housing for those facing gender-based violence, and has made a positive and lasting impact on the lives of many vulnerable women in the Greater Victoria region.

Purpose

Recognition is important.

Recognizes a longtime staff member or leader whose contribution to their society has propelled affordable housing in British Columbia.

Originally named after Denise LeBlond — a leader in affordable housing — the award changed in 2025 to better recognize longtime leaders and staff for their contributions.

Eligibility

How to get nominated.

Nominees for this award may include anyone who has contributed to BC affordable housing.
BCNPHA membership is not required for consideration, but nominees must contribute to the sector as a leader, staff member, or volunteer with a non-profit housing society. Nominators must advise nominees of their submission. The committee will notify the recipient by September 2025.

Award Criteria

How does someone qualify?

In addition to outstanding contributions and commitment to affordable housing, nominees must satisfy at least two of the following:

A career spent predominantly in the housing and homelessness sector.

Has improved access to housing for vulnerable community members or expanded housing options in BC.

Has shared knowledge with peers and young professionals to enable learning and succession.

A commitment to affordable housing sector organizations in BC.

What I love about this society is the commitment of the staff, the board and the volunteers. VWTH is 51 years old so the experience and the growth within our capacity has been ongoing.

Nomination Process

How it works.

The BCNPHA Awards Committee will review nominees throughout the nomination period and contact the nominator if the nominee meets eligibility criteria.
