Social Housing Management Certificate – Langara

The Social Housing Management Certificate is a self-paced, part-time program developed through a partnership between Langara College and the BC Non-Profit Housing Association. It is designed for staff, managers, and volunteers engaged in social housing operations or development. Students may enroll in individual courses. The certificate includes five required courses, as listed below.

Required Courses:
1. Social and Affordable Housing in BC*
2. Social Housing Management*
3. Negotiation and Dispute Resolution
4. Financial Skills for Managers
5. Business Communications

Students may register in any individual course, subject to a prerequisite in the case of Social Housing Management.

CIH Canada and Langara College

BCNPHA, CIH Canada and Langara College are committed to advancing learning and professional standards in housing.

Langara’s Social Housing Management certificate program has been approved through a validation process with the Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH), in order to recognize the program as leading directly to Certified membership with the professional body.

Students who successfully completed the Social Housing Management Certificate program and are active members with CIH Canada will be able to use the designatory letters CertCIH (Canada) after their name.

In addition, graduates of Langara’s Social Housing Management program qualify for direct entry into CIH Canada’s programs leading to Chartered membership, its highest membership grade.


History of the Social Housing Management Certificate Program

In 1999, BCNPHA surveyed its members to find out the kind of education programming they would like to have provided through the Association. The response was overwhelming for a post-secondary option, preferably that would provide some kind of recognized credit for the education. With financial support from the Real Estate Foundation, and in partnership with a number of expert practitioners in the field of social housing management, BCNPHA proceeded to develop curriculum for an academic, college-level course called Social and Affordable Housing in BC.

The course was piloted to test its effectiveness, which led to some significant changes and improvements to the materials and the curriculum. In 2005 BCNPHA entered into a partnership with Langara College to offer two courses, one an introduction, and the other an in-depth seminar course as part of a Social Housing Management Certificate Program.

The writing of the course manuals and lessons for these two courses has involved years of planning, evaluating, writing and re-writing. We have strived to capture the essence of non-profit housing management – both the historical context to explain the philosophical and political roots, and the practical day-to-day operations. Whether social and affordable housing is a brand new concept or an existing career, these courses will expand your understanding of the field.
