Victoria Cool Aid Society

This is a unique opportunity to join the senior management team of one of the largest non-profit health and housing organizations in Victoria, with 19 properties, 350 staff and an operating budget of $30 million.

Cool Aid’s programs are diversified to help people who are homeless or living in extreme poverty in multiple ways. We are a leader in inner-city healthcare with 7,000 patients and world-class health research. Cool Aid supports 585 tenants in supportive and affordable housing. We also operate shelters, community outreach, employment, the Downtown Community Centre and support services.

The Director will bring exemplary technical accounting skills and demonstrate dynamic leadership as an active member of the Society’s senior management team. Strong business and capital asset acumen, as well as an understanding of not-for-profit organizations, will benefit this diverse and rewarding position. The Director works from an operational risk management perspective, reviewing financial policy, practices, and internal controls to mitigate the Society’s risk exposure, as well as providing objective, accurate information and analyses to ensure the Society is making informed financial decisions. The Director also has overarching responsibility for the organizations’ information systems and technology requirements.

The annual work plan includes funder budget submissions, compilation of the consolidated agency budget (for 37 programs); preparation of detailed working papers and draft financial statements for the annual audit; funder and legislative filings; and staff performance reviews.

With the support of the Senior Accountant, the Director supervises a skilled team who process large volumes of transactions with a high level of accuracy – up to 150 accounts payable weekly, up to 275 biweekly payroll payments, more than 600 monthly accounts receivable transactions, all rolling up into the $30 million dollar budget. Technical accounting skills needed include preparing financial statements in accordance with Canadian accounting standards for not-for-profit organizations using the deferral method of accounting for contributions (restricted and unrestricted).

The Director participates in preparing monthly journal entries and an analytical review of the internal financial statements. Variances and trends are reported to the CEO and program directors and a full written report is provided to the Board Finance Committee quarterly.
