Small is Beautiful: Building in Small and Rural Communities

The goal of the session is to improve an understanding of the municipal policy tools that can support affordable housing and how they can be used in Small Communities. Participants will learn about the challenges that small communities often face in development of affordable housing and examples of opportunities and ways to develop affordable housing in small communities.

Presenters

Kaela Schramm

Kaela is the Director of Projects and Planning at M’akola Development Services. Kaela’s vision and strategic planning has allowed for M’akola to expand their services to now include planning and research, community engagement, development consulting, project management, operations management and capacity building and Indigenous relations. Kaela provides oversight to over 2700 units across the province, representing approximately $1B in construction costs.

Katy Fabris

Katy is a Registered Professional Planner with over eight years’ experience in the public and non-profit sector. Since working with M’akola Katy has managed the completion of 3 buildings, representing 150 units and is currently managing the development of nearly 1,000 units. Katy’s previous experience includes working as a City Planner in a BC municipality and supporting small, northern and rural municipalities in a planning and economic development capacity.

Sandy Mackay

Sandy is an accomplished housing research and policy consultant with over 6 years of experience in local government planning and provincial level program management. He has developed Housing Needs Reports/Assessments and Housing Strategies for communities across British Columbia and consulted on Official Community Plan reviews and Health and Wellbeing Strategies.
