Introduction to Capital Planning focuses on the process of Capital Planning. This online, facilitated course will help new and experienced property and building managers, maintenance staff, and administrators learn the importance of a well-developed capital plan; how maintenance affects the capital plan; and how to guide/approach a building condition assessment to get the best results. Participants will learn how to read, maintain and update a Capital Plan as a component of this course. Participants have up to 8 weeks to complete the course.

Capital Planning for Maintenance Providers | Building Condition Assessment (BCA) | Creating a Capital Plan from a BCA | Using the Capital Plan | Final Project

What you'll learn

By the end of this course, successful participants will able to:

  • Read, use and update a Capital Plan
  • Describe and support data gathering for a BCA
  • Bundle projects
  • Describe how Capital Funding fits in the Capital Plan

Time commitment

This course includes approximately 24 hours of content. It is recommended that you commit to studying for 2-3 hours a week in order to be done in 8 weeks. You can progress at your own pace, log in to do assignments, and participate in forum discussions whenever when it’s convenient for you. Having said that, we do encourage you to stick to the posted weekly schedule so that most participants will be working on the same topic at roughly the same time.


This is an introductory level course with no prerequisites other than what is noted below. Completion of Asset Management Foundations is recommended, but not mandatory.

This is an online course and participants must have basic computer skills and have regular access to a computer with MS Office 2010 or later and a modern, safe browser. We recommend Chrome; however, any updated browser will work. Templates used in this course may require MS Excel, MS Word and .pdf reader. This course is provided in English and requires reading and writing at a grade 8 level.
