In November 2017, we wrapped up our most successful Housing Central Conference to date — with more than 1,300 delegates, 100-plus education sessions and an outstanding line-up of six keynote speakers, we’re now the biggest affordable housing conference in Canada. A big part of our success has a lot to do with you. Your conference proposals are how we build a roster of education sessions that are current, relevant and speak to the needs and issues you’re facing now.
About the Sessions
BCNPHA is seeking proposals from individuals and organizations interested in presenting one or more education sessions at the 2018 Housing Central Conference. Many of our conference presenters work in the sector and share the expertise they’ve gained through hands-on experience and research; their know-how complements the presenters who are brought in to share their knowledge from other fields.
Our conference sessions serve three core purposes:
- To deliver education to social housing providers;
- To facilitate engaging, thought-provoking dialogue on emerging issues in affordable housing; and,
- To facilitate partnership development within and across sectors to ensure that everyone has access to safe and affordable housing.
The sessions speak to a broad spectrum of audiences. As the must-attend conference on housing affordability, homelessness, Indigenous housing and more, the event attracts a range of housing providers, academics, and private sector representatives as well as government representatives and staff. The variety of educational opportunities ensures housing providers of all types find relevant topics to engage them, and that everyone from front-line staff to executives, board members and volunteers has an opportunity to learn and grow professionally.
Education sessions should be well structured, have clearly defined learning objectives and provide an opportunity for delegates to interact.
About our Speakers and Presenters
Over the course of the three days of our conference, we offer approximately 100 education sessions delivered by more than 120 speakers and presenters. Many of these presenters work in our sector and are sharing expertise they have gained through hands on experience and/or research. Other presenters are brought in to share their expertise from other fields. We encourage session proposals from across a broad range of sectors, including non-profits, all levels of government, academia and the private sector.
We recognize the significant contribution our presenters provide to our conference, and also the professional development our conference offers in return. Speakers are compensated for their time through complimentary registration for the day they are presenting. In specific cases where a speaker must travel a great distance and is bringing a unique perspective that will be of significant value to the conference, BCNPHA may be able to cover additional fees such as travel and accommodation. In other cases, BCNPHA may hire an external expert to deliver specific training such as First Aid to our delegates.
About our Delegates
Just as the non-profit and affordable housing sector is broad, so is the audience for our education sessions. The conference attracts a range of housing providers, academics, private sector businesses and government, each of which are looking to form relationships and to further develop themselves professionally. The housing providers who attend our conference represent the broad continuum of affordable housing, from small to large, urban and rural, from supportive housing to independent housing. We also engage people working on issues related to homelessness and service providers who engage with the tenants in non-profit housing, and we always welcome the lived experience perspective. Our audience includes front-line and support staff, executives, facilities staff, board members and volunteers. Some are new to their positions, and others have been involved for many years. We encourage a broad range of proposals to ensure we meet the needs of all delegates.
