Are you a highly motivated self-starter?

Do you take pride in the quality of your work be it litter pickup, weeding and lawn care, carpentry and plumbing repairs, replacing light bulbs and ballasts, fire protection system checks and tests, drywall repairs and painting, floor laying, repairing and adjusting door locks and closers?

Do you have formal training and experience in monitoring and maintaining the building envelope and in grounds maintenance (grass, trees, flowers and shrubs, in-ground sprinkler system, fencing, etc.)?

Do you have the emotional maturity and ability to accept direction from more than one “manager,” to prioritize your workload and to interact respectfully with all staff and with high-need clients?

If you answered yes to all these questions, we would like to talk with you about joining the Westcoast Genesis Society as Maintenance Specialist.

Why we exist and what we do
The Westcoast Genesis Society supports socially marginalized men to heal, grow, learn, build self-esteem, develop resilience and adopt values that will enable them to thrive in the wider community.

We provide transitional housing at our Genesis House and Maria Keary Cottage Community Residential Facilities (CRFs) for high-need men on conditional release from prison, monitor their compliance with release terms and support them to make changes that will help them live successfully in the community. This includes operation (at Maria Keary Cottage) of the only residential program in Canada for conditionally released men living with a fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD). We also have transitional housing beds at this location for chronically homeless men some of whom have had involvement with the criminal justice system, and we support them to make changes that will help them live successfully in the community.

Maintenance Specialist responsibilities
o Support the two House Managers (for Genesis House and Maria Keary Cottage) by proactively carrying out maintenance repairs and services, interior and exterior painting, doing exterior building and grounds upkeep, completing fire protection system checks and tests and assisting with fire drills, hiring and supervising contractors as needed and providing expert maintenance advice, doing related tasks as assigned (e.g. assisting with groceries on delivery day).
o Regularly clean condenser coils on coolers and freezers at both houses and replace/clean HVAC filters at Maria Keary Cottage. (Preventive maintenance of HVAC equipment, coolers and freezers and gas ranges is contracted out.)
o Remove garbage and recycling from both houses and put in appropriate disposal bins. Take bulky items to recycling depot or garbage dump using Society truck.
o Replenish paper towels, toilet tissue and hand soap in both houses.
o Dust/sweep/vacuum service rooms at both houses, including Storage Room at Maria Keary Cottage. (Other janitorial cleaning is contracted out.)
o Clean the grills on two gas ranges weekly (there is a semi-commercial kitchen in each house).
o Order building maintenance supplies when needed.
o Carry out spot cleaning when contract cleaner is absent.
o Other tasks as assigned.

Qualifications
o Minimum of two years of experience providing residential building maintenance and grounds services.
o Reliability Status clearance at the Protected B level.
o Class 5 driver’s licence.
o Certification as a Residential Building Maintenance Worker (RBMW) highly desirable (see http://www.itabc.ca/program/residential-building-maintenance-worker).
o Diploma in building maintenance, preferably including geothermal heating systems and other mechanical systems (e.g. heat pumps, heat recovery ventilators), and high level of competence in basic trades (carpentry, electrical, plumbing, drywall repairs and painting, floor laying, roofing repairs).
o Valid (i.e. current) certificates for First Aid Level One with Basic CPR and for WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System) required.
o Training and demonstrated competence in writing scopes of work, obtaining bids and supervising contractors desirable.
o Demonstrated emotional maturity, self-confidence, assertiveness, ability to network and build relationships, leadership and teamwork ability, commitment and integrity to follow through to completion, and ability to accomplish goals independently through personal resourcefulness and creative problem solving.
o Computer literate.
o Must demonstrate personal commitment to professional standards of work, to the Society’s mission of assisting marginalized men to reintegrate successfully into the community, and to maintaining the dignity and worth of each client.
